Gophers Defeat Missouri 188-112

The No. 8 Minnesota men's swimming and diving team won 12 of 16 events in a 188-112 rout of Missouri this afternoon in Columbia, Mo. Kevin Baseheart, Michael McBroom and Alex Wold won two events apiece to lead the Gophers. The Gophers improved to 4-0 in dual meet action.
The meet opened with a bang as Curt Carlson edged Missouri's Jordan Hawley at the wall to give the Gophers a win in the 200 medley relay. The two anchors left the blocks at the exact same time but Carlson managed to go .08 seconds quicker on the final leg to give Minnesota the win in 1:30.51. Nadav Kochavi, Ivan Gutesa and Baseheart also figured in the Minnesota win while Missouri finished in 1:30.59.
McBroom picked up his first win in the 1000 freestyle, completely dominating the event from the start and cruising to the win in 9:17.92. The Gophers' Nico Zebley was a distant second in 9:28.54. McBroom later took first in the 500 free with a time of 4:33.03, edging the Tigers' Cameron Sellers (4:33.84).
Baseheart recovered nicely from the 200 medley relay win, taking the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.80, easily ahead of Missouri's Yaniv Shnaider (1:40.92). Baseheart also won the 100 butterfly toward the end of the meet with a time of 49.18.
Freshman Josh Hall picked up his first career event victory by taking the 100 breaststroke in a time of 57.01, winning by just .09 seconds over Missouri's Michael Lopresti while Gutesa was a close third in 57.13. Gutesa returned to win the 200 breast in 2:03.17 while Hall followed in second with a time of 2:04.63.
Wold won his first event in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:50.79 and later claimed the 200 individual medley in 1:51.68. Richards and Carlson had a nice race in the 50 free with Richards touching out his teammate at the wall in 20.19 while Carlson touched in 20.21. The roles were reversed in the 100 free later with Carlson taking first in 44.06 while Richards was the runner-up in 45.42.
In diving action, junior Drew Brown tallied a strong NCAA zone qualifying score of 370.10 on the 3-meter board but it wasn't enough to topple the Tigers' Greg Destephen who won with a score of 384.65. Freshman Kristoffer Jorgensen was fourth with a score of 315.00. In platform diving action, Brown was third with a score of 325.35 and Jorgensen was fourth (314.40). Destephen took first with a score of 398.40.
Minnesota finished the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay. Baseheart, Carlson, Zach Bolin and Richards won with a time of 3:00.12.
Missouri's Jan Konarzewski swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 in 49.89, just ahead of Karl Burdis, who touched in 49.99.
Minnesota returns to the pool January 29-30 when it travels to Wisconsin to face the Badgers and Purdue in Big Ten Triple Duals action.
