Redshirt freshman Jack Szmanda was named the Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week after capturing the heptathlon title at the Jack Johnson Classic last weekend. Szmanda compiled a tally of 5,377 points in his first collegiate heptathlon, an NCAA provisional qualifying score and a new Minnesota freshman record.

Szmanda, a Wausau, Wis., native, placed in the top three is six events with two top performances in the pole vault (16-1 3/4) and shot put (43-10 3/4). He was clocked at 7.29 seconds in the 60 meters, 8.61 seconds in the 60-meter high hurdles and 2:50.56 in the 1,000-meter run. His other marks in field events were 6-2 3/4 in the high jump and 21-6 1/4 in the long jump.

Szmanda adds another talented multi-sport competitor to the Golden Gopher corps that captured the top three spots in the heptathlon and last year’s Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships.
