Minnesota Travels to Penn State and Ohio State

The Minnesota volleyball team will travel to No. 9 Penn State on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. (CT). The Gophers will also face Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 5 p.m.
Minnesota's match against Penn State can be seen on ESPN2 on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 12 p.m. (CT). It can also be seen live online on ESPN3.com. Beth Mowins will do play-by-play and Kelli Tennant will do color commentary. Minnesota’s match against Ohio State can be seen live on the Big Ten Network. Randy Rhinehart will do play-by-play and Audrey Flaugh will do color commenatry.
The Gophers are currently on a stretch where they are playing 12 of 14 matches on the road. After falling in four sets to No. 24 Northwestern on Oct. 10, the Gophers are 9-3 in that stretch with its other losses coming at No. 23 San Diego and No. 22 Michigan.
Minnesota enters the week tied for fourth in the Big Ten with Purdue at 4-2, is ranked No. 19 and has a 14-4 overall record. Tabi Love has 3.83 kps, 2.02 dps and 0.62 blps, while Ashley Wittman has 3.61 kps, 3.31 dps and 0.75 blps. Wittman is third in the nation among freshmen in points per set and fifth in kills. She also joins Illinois' Laura DeBruler as one of only two players in the Big Ten to average over 3.00 kills per set and digs per set on the season.
Junior libero Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) leads the Big Ten in digs with 5.14 dps. She also has a conference 5.77 dps in Big Ten play. Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) enters the weekend hitting .350, and is averaging 1.67 kps and 1.11 blps. Stephanie Nucci and Mia Tabberson also average 10.70 aps (4th in the Big Ten) and 10.18 aps (8th in the Big Ten) respectively.
Penn State enters the week in sixth place in the Big Ten at 3-3, is ranked No. 9 in the nation and has a 13-4 overall record. The Nittany Lions lost in five sets at Purdue and in four sets at Indiana this past week. The last time Penn State had three losses in conference play came in 2003 when they finished first at 17-3. The Nittany Lions were 14-6 in 2002 when it finished in second place behind Minnesota, who was the last Big Ten program to win a conference title.
The Nittany Lions are led by Freshman Deja McClendon who has 3.57 kps, 2.02 dps, is hitting .346 and has 0.68 blps. Blair Brown also has 3.60 kps, 1.96 dps and 0.89 blps, while Arielle Wilson is hitting .409 with 2.70 kps and 1.28 blps. Katie Slay leads the team with 1.44 blps, while Alyssa D’Errico has 3.89 dps. Setter Kristin Carpenter has 10.30 aps and 2.13 dps. Penn State leads the all-time series against Minnesota 34-7, and have won the last 11 meetings. Minnesota’s last victory came at State College on Oct. 2, 2004 in a five-set victory. Penn State brings an 82-match home winning streak into the week. The Golden Gophers snapped what was then an NCAA-record 87-match home-winning streak on Sept. 29, 2000.
