Minnesota Falls to Ohio State

The 19th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (14-6, 4-4) dropped its third straight contest as it fell at Ohio State (16-4, 4-4) in three sets by scores of 25-23, 25-20, 25-17 on Saturday, Oct. 16.
Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) had 10 kills, three digs and one solo block, while Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) hit .353 with eight kills, seven digs and two blocks. Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) had seven kills, 12 digs and two solo blocks. Jessica Granquist had a match-high 16 digs, while Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) finished with 24 assists. Lauren Gibbemeyer also had seven kills in two sets of action.
In the first set, the Gophers fell behind 20-14 before battling back to cut it to 21-18. Ohio State pushed it to set point at 24-21, but Love responded with a kill and Dixon and Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) combined on a block ot make it 24-23.
The Buckeyes put the set away on the next point to win 25-23. Ohio State outhit Minnesota .500 (19-1-36) to .212 (12-5-33) in the second set en route to a 25-20 victory that put the Buckeyes up 2-0 in the match. In the third set, Ohio State limited the Gophers to a .128 (12-7-39) hitting percentage and hit .265 (12-3-34) to claim the three-set victory.
Minnesota was outhit .356 (47-10-104) to .198 (37-17-101) in the match. The .356 clip was the highest by a Gopher opponent in 2010. Ohio State also had 47 kills to 37 for Minnesota. The Gophers were also narroly outblocked 6.0-to-5.0. Minnesota did outdig Ohio State 45 to 43 on the night.
Ohio State was led by Kelli Barhorst who hit .429 with 11 kills and five blocks. Anna Szerszen also had 10 kills and nine digs. Betsy Hone finished with 33 assists, six digs and four kills.
Minnesota will be back in action when it hosts No. 8 Illinois on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. That match will be shown on a tape-delay broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 12 p.m. The Gophers will also face Wisconsin at Williams Arena on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. That match can be seen on BigTenNetwork.com.
