University of Minnesota Athletics will take part in the Game Day Waste Reduction Challenge during Saturday’s football game at TCF Bank Stadium vs. Penn State.

The Game Day Waste Reduction Challenge is a competition between colleges and universities to promote waste reduction at football games and Minnesota Athletics is asking Gopher fans attending the Penn State game to do their part to help recycle on Saturday.

Throughout the month of October, participating institutions will select one home football game during which they will implement a waste reduction program. Schools will then track the corresponding amounts of recycling and waste. The winning school will be announced in November.

The Challenge is being sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and encourages institutions to lower waste generated at college football games by heightening awareness of waste reduction programs and increasing participation with those initiatives.

Minnesota’s official “Game Week” runs from, Oct. 21-28. During that time, the TCF Bank Stadium staff has designed a detailed plan and will take advantage of every possible opportunity to avoid producing waste through increased recycling and composting strategies. TCF Bank Stadium staffers are also working with vendors and service providers on initiatives to reduce additional waste and additional recycling receptacles will be stationed around the stadium for fan use.
