ABOUT THE HUSKIES
The 2010-11 season is a bit of a rebuilding year for St. Cloud State as it lost its top five scorers from last year’s third-place WCHA team. The Huskies are looking for their first win of the 2010-11 season, sitting at 0-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the WCHA. After falling to Mercyhurst to start the season, SCSU fell to Wayne State (10/8) and Ohio State (10/15-16) last weekend. Kylie Lane, Alex Nelson, Callie Dahl and Julia Gilbert have all scored goals for SCSU, while 10 have recorded a point. Ashley Nixon has been in goal four games, holding a 0-4-0 record and an .858 save percentage. Tayler VanDenakker has also seen action between the pipes, playing in two games and starting in one.
THE SERIES
Minnesota holds a 41-3-2 record against the Huskies, dating back to Jan. 9, 1999. Last year, the Gophers went 2-1-1 (SCSU won the shootout) in a home-and-home series. Prior to their last meeting against SCSU, the Gophers won eight straight.
AT THE NATIONAL HOCKEY CENTER
The 2010-11 season marks the first time since 2004-05 season that the Gophers will play two-straight games at the National Hockey Center. Since that time, all series between the in-state rivals have been a home-and-home series. At the NHC, Minnesota has held a 19-3-0 record on the big ice (200 x 100), falling in the three times to SCSU on its home ice.
THE LAST TIME
Minnesota and St. Cloud State played four times last year in two home-and-home series. In the Oct. 23-24, 2009 weekend, Minnesota walked away with a 4-0 and 7-0 win, with the first game in St. Cloud, Minn. Later in the year, the Gophers and Huskies, tied, 2-2 with SCSU winning the shootout. The Huskies followed with a 6-3 win the next night in St. Cloud to take three points away in the WCHA standings.
STARTING THEIR GOPHER CAREERS
Kelly Terry scored her first career goals as a Golden Gopher when she netted a goal in each of the games against North Dakota. Terry has three points on the season, while linemate and fellow freshman, Sarah Davis, also has three points, all coming on assists. Amanda Kessel leads the team with four goals and four assists for eight points.
HIT THE GROUND RUNNING
During the first month of the season, Minnesota will have four opponents ranked in the top 10. Of their 11 games to kick off the season, eight come against opponents who are ranked. Minnesota is currently 2-2-0 against ranked opponents this season. The Gophers started the regular season with a two-game series against then-No. 7 Clarkson, sweeping the Golden Knights. The Gophers then hosted then-No. 10 North Dakota and were swept by the Sioux. The Gophers then play defending national champions and No. 4 Minnesota Duluth, Oct. 29-30 on the road. Following the UMD series, No. 1 Wisconsin visits Ridder Arena, Nov. 5-6.
