Four members of the women's tennis team are competing in the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. The event, which is being contested at the Dills Indoor Stadium and the Billingsley Center, runs from Oct. 22-25.

The four Gophers competing in singles and doubles play in Arkansas are senior Alessandra Ferrazzi, junior Magdalena Wiecha, sophomore Alexa Palen and freshman Natallia Pintusava.

Through two days of play, Pintusava is the only Gopher still competing in singles. The Minsk, Belarus, native beat Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska to advance to the quarterfinals and will return to the court on Sunday with a bid to the semifinals on the line. In doubles, Pintusava and partner Wiecha beat Malika Rose and C.C. Sardinha of Oklahoma State to advance to the quarterfinals but were then eliminated 8-6 by Emily Carbone and Stephanie Roy from Arkansas.

Ferrazzi and doubles partner Palen won both their matches on Saturday to advance to the semifinals. They dropped Kansas State's Karla Bonacic and Petra Niedermayerova and then thumped Big Ten rivals Sonja Molnar and Lynn Poggensei-Wei of Iowa 8-1.

Ferrazzi's singles run ended with a three-set defeat in the round of 16. Wiecha and Palen were defeated in the second round of singles play yesterday.
