10/27/2010 12:00:00 AM | Women's Hockey

Junior defenseman Anne Schleper (St. Cloud Minn.) and sophomore goalie Noora Raty (Espoo, Finland) both received weekly conference honors after their performances against St. Cloud State last weekend. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced that Schleper was named co-WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, while Räty was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.

Schleper scored six points, four of which came on the power play to lead the Golden Gophers to a series sweep in her hometown of St. Cloud, Minn. On Friday night, Schleper tied a career-high four points when she contributed on four of five goals. After holding the first assist on Sarah Davis’ game-winning, power-play goal, she scored an even-strength goal at 11:35 in the first. She followed with adding the first assist on both of Becky Kortum’s goals in the second. In Saturday’s contest, Schleper, assisted on two of the three power-play goals in the 3-0 win over SCSU. Entering the weekend with just one point this year, she is now tied for second on the team with seven.

Schleper is the first WCHA defenseman to receive Offensive Player of the Week honors since Minnesota Duluth’s Jocelyne Larocque accomplished it in 2009. She is the first Gopher defenseman to be named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, since the award was split into three categories (offensive, defensive and rookie) in 2002-03. Ronda Curtin was named WCHA Player of the Week back in 2001-02.

After a week hiatus, Räty returned between the pipes and played to perfection, holding the Huskies scoreless on the weekend. Playing the full 120 minutes on the weekend, Räty, a sophomore from Espoo, Finland had 32 saves and recorded back-to-back shutouts this weekend. In four games this season, Räty has yet to allow a goal, holding a 1.000 save percentage and a 0.00 goals against average. The award marks the first time this season Räty has been named the defensive player of the week and the fifth time in her career after receiving the award four times as a freshman.

Schleper, Räty and the rest of the No. 6 Golden Gophers travel to No. 3 and defending national champions, Minnesota Duluth this weekend. Both games on Friday and Saturday will be played at 7:07 p.m. at the DECC in Duluth, Minn.
