Gophers Host Iowa in Midweek Match

Minnesota will face its travel partner Iowa on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. That match can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.

The Gophers will also welcome in No. 24 Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. Minnesota enters the week with a 15-7 overall record and is in a five-way tie for fourth place in the Big Ten at 5-5.

Tabi Love enters the week with a team-high 3.78 kps and has 1.94 dps. Freshman Ashley Wittman is averaging 3.44 kps, 3.17 dps and 0.69 blps. Junior Jessica Granquist leads the Big Ten with 5.12 dps, while senior Laure Gibbemeyer is averaging 2.77 kps, 1.17 blps and is hitting .346. Stephanie Nucci leads the team with 10.16 aps and has 1.84 dps.

The Golden Gophers enter the week as only team in the Big Ten to be in the top five in hitting percentage (3rd at .268), assists (fourth at 12.90 aps), blocks (third at 2.66 blps),opponent hitting percentage (fourth at .161) and kills (third at 13.90 kps). Minnesota is one of two teams in the conference to be in the top five in five of the six categories listed (hitting percentage, assists, blocks, opponent hitting pct., kills and service aces).

Iowa enters the week at 6-13 overall and 1-9 in Big Ten play. Last week, the Hawkeyes lost in five sets at home to Wisconsin and in three sets to No. 6 Illinois. Iowa is led by Mallory Husz who has 2.46 kps and 0.91 blps, while Becky Walters has 2.43 kps and 0.94 blps. Bethany Yeager leads the way with 4.54 dps. Paige Stevens also has 6.83 kps and 2.15 dps, while Nikki Dailey has 2.94 aps and 2.05 dps. Minnesota leads the all-time series 65-21 and has won the last 30 meetings between the two programs. The Gophers won the first meeting in three sets at Iowa City on Oct. 6.

Northwestern enters the week ranked No. 24 in the nation, is in a five-way tie for fifth in the Big Ten at 5-5 and has a 15-6 overall record. Last week, the Wildcats lost in five sets to Ohio State at home and dropped a three-set decision to No. 9 Penn State. Northwestern is led by Naomi Johnson who has 2.94 kps and 0.97 blps, while Sabel Moffett has 2.85 kps and is averaging 1.46 blps. Moffett finished with 14 blocks in the first matchup against the Golden Gophers. Stephanie Holthaus also has 2.71 kps and 2.61 dps, while Christina Kaelin has 2.41 kps. Julie Chin leads the team with 3.57 dps and Elyse Glab is averaging 11.25 aps and 1.86 dps. Minnesota leads the all-time series 45-17, but lost the earlier meeting in Evanston on  Oct. 10 in four sets.
