Jillian Tyler Wins Grand Prix Title With NCAA "A" Time

Minnesota senior Jillian Tyler won her second event in the Minnesota Grand Prix on Saturday, capturing the title in the 200-yard breaststroke. Tyler edged teammate Haley Spencer in the race in which both Golden Gopher All-Americans notched NCAA “A” qualifying time. Tyler was clocked at a season-best time of 2 minutes, 8.24 seconds, while Spencer touched in her season-best time of 2:08.43.

The Gophers collected six NCAA “B” qualifying times in Saturday’s action as well. Three of them came in the 500 free, where Ashley Steenvoorden swam a season-best time of 4:41.16 finishing second behind US Olympian Chloe Sutton (4:38.79). The two will face each other against on Sunday in the 1,650 free. Also posting season-best times were Hannah Whitehead in third place in 4:43.88 and Kristen Steenvoorden in fifth in 4:48.26.

Two more “B” qualifiers came in the 200 butterfly. Molly Belk collected a silver medal for a second-place finish in a season-best time of 1:57.49. Kaela Anderson added her season best and a third-place showing with a time of 2:00.31. Also swimming in the championship final and clocking season-best times were Annalise Colton in fifth in 2:01.33 and Courtney Veerman in seventh in 2:02.36.

Completing the list of NCAA “B” performances was the Gophers’ 800 free relay of Hannah Whitehead, Ashley Steenvoorden, Lauren Weis and Marissa Davies. The foursome won the gold medal in a time of 7:15.25.

A trio of Gopher 50 freestylers swam season top times led by Kaylee Jamison, who finished fourth in 23.27 seconds. Meagan Radecke was fifth in 23.27 and Alison Eggers sixth in 23.36.

Two other Gophers swam in the 200 breast championship final with Tyler and Spencer. Katie Johnson finished sixth in a season-best time of 2:18.43, while Danielle James posted her best of 2:19.92 to finish seventh.

The Minnesota Grand Prix at the University Aquatic Center concludes on Sunday with the prelims at 9 a.m. and the finals session beginning at 5 p.m. Admission is $10 per session.
