Minnesota Falls to Dayton in Subway Classic Title Game

Dayton led from start to finish on Sunday afternoon, recording a 97-81 women's basketball victory against host Minnesota to capture the 2010 Subway Classic championship.

The Flyers (2-2) jumped to their early lead on back-to-back three-pointers by junior forward Justine Raterman and junior guard Patrice Lalor, giving them an 8-3 cushion at the 18:06 mark.

Junior forward Jackie Voigt and junior guard Kiara Buford each scored to cut it to 8-7, but UD responded with a 10-2 run to stretch its lead to 17-9 following a three-pointer by junior forward Elle Queen, a native of Excelsior.

Freshman forward Kionna Kellogg and senior forward Kristen Dockery scored during a 6-3 Gophers run to cut it to 17-13 with 13:23 left in the half, but the Flyers outscored the Golden Gophers 16-2 over the next 7:08 to take control of the game. Dayton's first-half advantage grew to as many as 21 points late in the half, and it led by that margin, 54-33, at the break.

The Flyers didn't let up in the second half, building as much as a 26-point lead on their way to the Subway Classic title. Lalor led the Flyers with a game-high 25 points, while Raterman had 21 points, and Kristin Daugherty tallied 15 points and four assists.

Minnesota (3-2) was led by Buford's 18 points , while sophomore guard Leah Cotton came off the bench for 12 points, and Dockery scored a career-high 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Sari Noga also recorded her first career double-digit point total with 10 points on 4-of-6 field goals, including 2-of-3 treys.

Minnesota returns to action on Friday (Nov. 26) at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev. The Gophers open the tournament against San Diego State at 5:00 p.m. (CST). The other teams are Nevada and North Carolina State.

Consolation Game: Milwaukee 58, South Dakota 53
Milwaukee evened its record at 2-2 and captured third place at the 2010 Subway Classic with a 58-53 win versus South Dakota on Sunday afternoon at Williams Arena.

The Panthers were led by senior guard Lindsay Laur's 24 points and nine rebounds. A native of Roseville, Minn., and a graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall, Laur made 15-of-15 free throw attempts in the game and was named to the Subway Classic all-tournament team.

Milwaukee won the game, even while making just 13-of-59 (.220) field goal attempts. The Panthers held a 53-40 adge in rebounding, with freshman center Courtney Lindfors tying Laur for team-high honors with nine boards.

South Dakota (2-3) was led by sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson, who finished with 14 points and three steals to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Freshman forward Stacia Robertson added 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds, and junior guard Annie Roche chipped in with 11 points.
