Gibbemeyer Named National Player of the Week

Senior middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) was named CVU.com National Player of the Week on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Gibbemeyer averaged 4.00 kps, 1.44 blps and hit .397 in a week where Minnesota defeate Ohio State in four sets and rallied from down 2-0 to defeat No. 7 Penn State for the first time since 2004. Against Ohio State, Gibbemeyer had 11 kills, five blocks and hit .455 for the match. On Senior Night against the Nittany Lions, Gibbemeyer had a career-high 25 kills, eight blocks and hit .375 to help lead a thrilling comeback victory against Penn State. With the score tied at 21 in the fifth set, Gibbemeyer combined on a block with Ashley Wittman and put down a kill to finish out the match.

Minnesota finished the Big Ten season in a tied for second place with Illinois at 14-6. The Gophers were the hottest team in the conference in the second half going 9-1 in the final 10 Big Ten contests. Gibbemeyer played a big role in that effort, as she averaged 3.65 kps, 1.65 blps and hit .401 in the final 10 regular-season matches for the Gophers.

Gibbemeyer becomes the second Golden Gopher to win CVU.com National Player of the Week honors. Last year, Taylor Carico claimed the honors on Dec. 1, 2009. Gibbemeyer joins Ashley Benson as one of two players out of the Big Ten to claim the honors this season. Gibbemeyer enters the week tied for first in the Big Ten in blocks (1.43 blps), third in hitting percentage (.378) and fifth in points 4.16 pps.
