Minnesota Falls to Indiana in Four Sets

The 19th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (17-8, 7-6) lost to Indiana (18-7, 6-7) in four sets by scores of 25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22 at University Gym in Bloomington, Ind. on Friday, Nov. 5.
Minnesota was led by senior middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who had 14 kills, hit .310 and collected five blocks. With the five blocks, Gibbemeyer broke the school record for career blocks. She finished the night with 537 career blocks, moving past Pam Miller and Meredith Nelson who were tied for first place on the list at 536.
Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) also finished with 10 kills and four digs, while Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) had 10 kills and three digs. Junior Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had 25 digs on the night. It was the 11th time in 13 Big Ten matches that Granquist has had the match-high in digs. Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) also finished with eight kills, eight digs and three blocks.
Indiana limited the Gophers to a .086 hitting percentage in the first set on the way to claiming it 25-22. The Gophers bounced back to run out to a 22-15 lead in the second set after a kill by Love. Indiana answered with six of the next eight points to cut the lead to 23-21. Dixon delivered a kill to make it set point at 24-21. However, the Hoosiers closed out the set with the final five points of the set to move ahead 2-0 in the match.
Minnesota came back to hit .423 (13-2-26) in the third set on the way to claiming the third set 25-22. Wittman had four kills in seven swings, and Gibbemeyer also collected four kills in the set. In the fourth set, Indiana outhit Minnesota .244 to .132 in the fourth set on the way to claim the four-set victory.
Indiana outhit Minnesota .194 (64-32-165) to .183 (45-21-131), and had 64 kills to 45 for the Gophers. The Hoosiers also narrowly outblocked Minnesota 13.0-to-12.0. The Gophers did have 63 digs to 59 for Indiana, but the Hoosiers collected six service aces to one for Minnesota.
The Hoosiers were led by Jordan Haverly who had 24 kills and 15 digs. Ashley Benson also had 15 kills and collected nine blocks. Mary Chaudoin also had 35 assists, three blocks and two kills.
Minnesota will be back in action when it travels to Purdue on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m. (CT). That match can be heard live in the Gold Zone.
