Whitehead Leads Gopher to Win Over Iowa

The Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team notched a 180-114 victory over Big Ten rival Iowa Friday night at the Aquatic Center. The Golden Gophers are off to a 5-0 record in dual meets this season. Minnesota is now 4-0 in the Big Ten Conference after winning a convincing 12 out of 16 events against Iowa.

“It’s a great win. It’s always fun to have a Big Ten dual meet in a championship environment,” Minnesota co-head Coach Terry Nieszner said.

The Gophers began the meet on a high note winning the first event of the night, the 200-yard medley relay. Minnesota continued to set the tone as the Maroon and Gold captured the top three places in the second event, the 1000 yard freestyle.


Junior Hannah Whitehead shined on Friday winning a total of four events. Whitehead led off the 200 medley relay of Megan Radecke, Haley Spencer and Annalise Colton to a win clocking in at 1:43.22. Whitehead followed up by winning the 200 free with a season best 1:49.67. With Minnesota up 138 to 69, Whitehead added her third title in the 500 free with a time of 4:50.14. Whitehead finished the night placing first in the 200 individual medley clocking in at 2:04.35.

Freshman Tess Behrens contributed to a Minnesota victory as a dual champion. The swimmer from Maple Grove won both the 100 yard backstroke and freestyle with times of 56.60 and 52.60, respectively. Behrens backstroke time was a season best.

Other dual champions were Colton, Kaylee Jamison and Alison Eggers. After helping the 200 medley relay to the win, Colton placed first in the 100 yard butterfly with a, season-best time of 55.70. Besides helping the 200 yard freestyle relay team, Jamison also swam a season best of 2:02.38 in the 200 butterfly. Eggers, was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay, placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.83.

An impressive total of four Gophers finished the night with season bests. Minnesota also swept the top three places in four events: the 1,000 free, the 200 butterfly, the 100 free and the 200 breast.

Other winners from Friday night were junior Kristen Steenvoorden and freshman Danielle James. Steenvoorden won the 1,000 free clocking in at 9:55.37, while James captured the crown in the 200 breast in 2:22.02.

Minnesota’s next meet is tomorrow against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The co-ed dual meet starts at 12 p.m. Admission is free.
