Blog: Seniors Remaining Positive Down the Stretch

As the University of Minnesota football team prepares for its second to last game of the season at Illinois on Saturday, the realization is quickly setting in for the senior student-athletes that their time at Minnesota on the playing field is nearing its end.

While this may not have been the final season many of the seniors envisioned when they began their football careers at Minnesota, they are remaining positive and trying to enjoy every moment they can.

"That's one thing that the coaches have really stressed these last few weeks," senior defensive back Ryan Collado said. "It's the end of the year and we need to be having fun with it all."

The Gopher seniors are also still keeping elements of life in perspective in a season that has seen several personal issues come up with their teammates during the season. These would include redshirt freshman Connor Cosgrove being diagnosed with leukemia and senior Jon Hoese's father passing away.

"It's a game and it's one we love and have a lot of pride in," Hoese said. "But it is a sport and there are bigger things out there that matter more in life than a loss, if you want to look at it that way."

Even with the season's wins and losses not going the way the Gophers had hoped, there have been elements for the team and to take pride in, including Adam Weber reaching the 10,000-yard passing mark in week eight against Penn State.

While acknowledging their accomplishments and taking the time to enjoy their final few weeks in their Gopher uniforms, the seniors are also continuing to push themselves to set a standard for the younger players who will continue to take the field after they are gone.

"Now we're coming to that final stretch and as seniors we're trying to make the most out of it," Weber said. "We try to give our best every single day and enjoy every single moment, and for the younger guys we try to leave a legacy for them."
