Junior libero Jessica Granquist was named to the Mideast All-Region team according to an announcement by the America Volleyball Coaches Association on Tuesday, Dec. 7. Freshman Ashley Wittman was also named Honorable-Mention All-Region as well.
Senior Lauren Gibbemeyer, who was named First-Team All-Big Ten, was ineligible for All-Region or All-American honors due to an AVCA rule that states that a player must have competed in 66.7 percent of the team's sets on the season at the conclusion of the regular-season (time of the nomination). Gibbemeyer had competed in 62.5 percent (75 of 120) of the team's sets going into the NCAA Tournament.
Granquist was the only libero to be named First-Team Mideast All-Region. She was also one of only seven liberos in the nation to be named First-Team All-Region. Granquist joins Christine Tan (2008), Malama Peniata (2006) and Paula Gentil (2002-05) on a list of former Gopher liberos to be named First-Team All-Region.
Heading into the NCAA Regionals, Granquist leads the Big Ten in digs at 5.13 dps. She was also 32nd in the nation in digs going into the week. She joins Missouri's Caitlyn Vann as one of two liberos who are in the top 40 in the nation in digs who are left in the NCAA Tournament. Granquist was also the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, a three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and a First-Team All-Big Ten honoree. Her 647 digs rank third on the single-season list. Granquist is only nine digs away from tying for second on the school's single-season list.
Wittman joins Brook Dieter (Honorable-Mention in 2007), Paula Gentil (first-team in 2002), Katrien DeDecker (second-team in 1993) and Andrea Gonzalez (second team in 1985) as one of five freshmen for the Gophers to claim All-Region honors. Wittman enters the week averaging 3.40 kps, 3.10 dps and 0.67 blps on the season. She the only play in the Big Ten to play in every match and average over 3.00 kps and 3.00 dps.
She is currently 10th in the Big Ten points (3.98 pps) and kills (3.40 kps). Wittman averaged 5.50 kps and 4.17 dps in her first two career NCAA Tournament matches last week. She enters the week with 428 kills and 390 digs. Wittman's 428 kills are the fourth-most by a freshman in school history. She is only 10 digs away from becoming the first Golden Gopher freshman to collect 400 kills and 400 digs in a season. Wittman also has a team-high 1,067 serve receive attempts. She is sixth in the Big Ten in serve-receive percentage at .970.
