Lots of Frequent Flier Miles

After Sunday, Minnesota has just one more home game with three road games upcoming. The Gophers are working on a challenging stretch of schedule to end the season that included five road games in the last seven contests.

Borton Nearing Title of Winningest Gopher Coach

Minnesota head coach Pam Borton has 164 wins on the Golden Gopher sidelines and is nine wins from becoming the winningest coach in Gopher women’s basketball history. Ellen Mosher-Hanson currently owns the honor with 172 in her 10 years (1977-87) with Minnesota.

Longest Skid in Borton Era Ends at Penn State

Minnesota snapped a six-game losing streak with a 59-52 victory at Penn State in the Gophers’ last outing on Thursday. The Gophers used an exceptional team performance at the free throw line, hitting 28-of-31 free throws, to capture the win. Brittany McCoy led all scorers with 14 points, including an 11-of-12 effort from the free throw line.

McCoy Sets the Standard in Gopher History

Brittany McCoy is the first and only player in Minnesota women’s basketball history to tally 100 or more assists in every season of a Golden Gopher career. She has 110 assists in her senior season, averaging a career-best 4.6 assists a game. McCoy is ranked second in the Big Ten in the statistic.

Top Scorers Provide a Challenge on Defense

Minnesota just faced Big Ten leading scorer Tyra Grant (19.9 ppg) from Penn State in their last outing and now head into another defensive challenge as the Conference’s second- and third-leading scorers, Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender and Samantha Prahaulis, come to Williams Arena.  Lavender, the defending Big Ten Player of the Year is averaging 19.4 points per league game, while Prahaulis, last year’s Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is chipping in 18.1 point an outing.
The Gophers held Grant to 11 points, nine points under her average going into the game.

Shakin’ it up Seemed to Help

Minnesota jumbled its starting lineup against Penn State and the result was a positive one. Zoe Harper and Katie Loberg started in the front court for the Gophers, while Brittany McCoy, Kiara Buford and Katie Ohm got the starting nod at the guards.

This and That About the Penn State Game

• Brittany McCoy led the Gophers with 14 points – the first time this season she led the team in scoring and the seventh player to take scoring honors in a game this season
• Zoe Harper started her first game since the third game of the 2006-07 season - that 116-game span between starts is the longest in school history
• Katie Loberg started her first collegiate game - now two true freshmen (Loberg and Leah Cotton) have started games this season
• Balance – eight Gophers played over 13 minutes in the game - Katie Ohm played the most minutes but it was only 30
• Offensive rebounds – Minnesota only grabbed four offensive rebounds but scored six points off of them
• Points off turnovers – Minnesota turned the ball over more than Penn State (17-14), but the Gophers outscored the Lady Lions in points off those turnovers (16-8)
• The Gophers made their first 15 free throw attempts
• They put us at the line a lot - in both games – Minnesota was 23-of-26 in the first meeting vs. Penn State and 28-of-31 in the second
• Minnesota’s 57 free throws attempted against Penn State measures up to be over a fifth of all the free throws the Gophers have shot in Big Ten play this year
• A two-minute spurt – Big Ten leading scorer Tyra Grant scored 11 consecutive points in a 2-minute span in the second half. She was 0-8 from the floor, no assists, no steals, in the other 25 minutes she played
• Minnesota hit a season-low 14 field goals in both games this season against Penn State - both were wins
• The Gophers shot a season-low 40 field goal attempts

The Gophers’ single-season record (need 100 attempts to be eligible) is 84.7 percent by Lindsay Whalen in 2002-03. At one point earlier this season, Voigt made 22 consecutive free throws.

Harper OK with Life on the Road
Zoe Harper has proven to be one of the Gophers’ most reliable players on the road this season. Harper, a 6-3 post, has averaged 8.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in Minnesota’s Big Ten road games this season. She tallied double figures in the Illinois, Northwestern and Ohio State road games.

Impressive Career Numbers for Ash

Senior Ashley Ellis-Milan has 820 caroms in her Gopher career. She is 28 rebounds from moving into the Golden Gophers’ top five on the all-time rebounding list. Ellis-Milan also has 1.235 career points.

One Point at a Time is a Good Thing for Gophers

A key to the Golden Gophers’ offense is getting to the free throw line. In 12 wins this season, the Gophers attempted an average of 24.9 per game. In comparison, Minnesota has attempted a total of just 195 free throws, an average of 16.3 attempts, in its 12 losses. Nearly a fifth of the Gophers’ free throws in losses come in the Wisconsin game (31).

Brittany McCoy Building on Starts Record
Senior Brittany McCoy made her 121st career start of her Gopher career in the game versus Penn State adding to her Minnesota record for consecutive start. She first set the record on Jan. 7 versus Northwestern. McCoy has started every game of her high school and college basketball career. McCoy passed Lindsay Whalen (2001-04), who started 111 straight during her Gopher career, to establish the new mark.
The next record on the horizon is the career record for games started which is 126 and has been held for 20 years by Linda Roberts (1978-81). McCoy would hit that milestone in the Big Ten Tournament.
McCoy also has the chance to become the Gophers’ first player to start every game during a four-year career.

Scouting Ohio State
