Minneapolis - In the final game of the 2010 Metrodome Softball Classic, Minnesota watched as Iowa State used two seventh-inning runs to come back for the win.
Iowa State struck first with two runs in the top of the first, followed by another run just an inning later. They Cyclones did not hold their 3-0 lead for long though, as the Gophers began chipping away in the third with their first run in the bottom half of the inning.
Iowa Sate countered with another score in the fourth to take back the three-run lead at 4-1. That's where the score would stay until the sixth inning, when the Gopher offense opened up for four runs to take a 5-4 lead with just one inning left to play.
Alissa Koch (Racine, Wis.) started the game for the Gophers and pitched the first six innings, striking out five batters along the way. In the seventh she was taken out in favor of Lacey Middlebrooks (Wake Village, Texas) who held a 3-0 record on the young season.
Middlebrooks, though, suffered her first loss as the Cyclones strung together enough hits for two runs, and a one-run lead in the eventual 6-5 win.
Allie Siu (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Heidi Carls (Villard, Minn.) each led at the plate with two hits for the Gophers, while Carls knocked in a game high two RBI.
At 3-3 on the season after the Metrodome Classic, the Gophers will take their show in the road in the coming weeks, starting with a trip to Boca Raton, Fla. and the Florida Atlantic Kick-off classic Feb. 19-21. Minnesota's first opponent will be Pittsburgh at 8:00 a.m. on Feb. 19.
