2010 NCAA Women’s Quarterfinal

University of Minnesota Head Coach Brad Frost
Opening Statement:

We are ecstatic about the victory today and the opportunity to play in our rink next week and compete for the national championship. I think it is really special because this team has had a lot over their heads since it was announced that we were going to host the Frozen Four. All of us as staff and players look at it as a real privilege and opportunity to be able to host.  Now, being able to play is what we want, but it wasn’t easy and we were able to get that done today. Again, it seems like I have been saying this for weeks, but we are in the entertainment business and we continue to give our ticket holders extra hockey. It is not necessarily how we drew it up, it is just the guts these guys have shown all year. I think the overtime games the last couple of weeks have been very beneficial to us because there is no panic in the locker room, and the kids just go out and play. They deserve it.  I thought we played a very solid game. We made a mistake in neutral ice and not getting the puck deep in their first goal but aside from that we didn’t give up a 2-on-1 all night, that was what we were trying to avoid. The second goal that they got, I think they would take that shot a million times and it might go in once, and it happened to go in tonight. We are really proud of our players, and we are excited to be advancing to the Frozen Four.

Junior forward Emily West:
On what it felt like after Clarkson tied the game…
Whenever a team scores like that it is never a boosting feeling. On the bench, it was tough to see that goal with so little time left, but we had to make due. We had to try to get the win or hold on to OT. We have been there before ,and I think it helped prepare us. Everyone was pretty calm, no one was really frantic. We knew what we had to do.

On her goals…
Lauren Dahm played really well and played the shots really well. She had great rebounds. Sara Erickson got a great shot off the goalie before my first goal. I just happen to be in the right place at the right time. In the overtime goal, I picked up the puck ,and I saw more space, and I just tried to take advantage of it. I knew that I had been shooting all night low left and thought that maybe she would bite on that and I could sneak the puck in.

Senior forward Brittany Francis:

On her first period goal…
It was somewhat of a gift, but I think the hard work before that sort of rewarded us. We were cycling down low, and Emily West fed me a great pass. I was trying to hit Sara (Erickson), but it hit the defenseman and went it. You take what you can get.
