Michigan Hands Gophers First Big Ten Loss

Sixth-ranked Michigan proved too much for Minnesota on Sunday in handing the Gophers a 7-0 setback at the Baseline Tennis Center.

It was Minnesota's first Big Ten loss of the season as the Gophers fell to 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten. Michigan is now 13-3 and 3-0 in the Big Ten following its seventh straight win. It was Minnesota's first home outdoor match of the season.

All of Michigan's singles wins were in straight sets and the Wolverines took all three doubles matches by 8-2 scores.

Magdalena Wiecha had Minnesota's top singles performance with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Michelle Sulahian at No. 6. The loss snapped Wiecha's four-match winning streak.

Alessandra Ferrazzi took on the nation's 26th-ranked player and suffered a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Denise Muresan at No. 1. Tijana Koprivica fell to Edina native Whitney Taney 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2.

Alexa Palen lost to Rika Tatsuno 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3, while Doron Muravnik fell to Mimi Nguyen 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 and Jackie Sperling was defeated by Tania Mahtani 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5.

The Gophers head to Columbus, Ohio for their next match to take on Ohio State on Fri., April 2.
