Senior Brittany McCoy was named the Golden Gophers’ Most Valuable Player award highlighting the Minnesota women’s basketball team’s annual team banquet held at TCF Stadium on Sunday evening.
McCoy, a senior from Lincolnwood, Ill., earned honorable mention accord by both the Big Ten’s coaches and media. A 5-10 point guard, McCoy ranked second in the Conference in assists, dishing out 5.1 per game, and third in steals (2.1 spg.) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.79). In addition, she averaged 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. McCoy has put her mark on Minnesota women’s basketball history becoming the first player to start every one of her 127 career games. McCoy also compiled over 500 career assists to rank third all-time in Gopher history.
McCoy was also honored with the Gophers’ Defensive Player of the Year award. A three-time recipient of the award (also won in 2007 and 2009), McCoy was charged with defending the opponent’s top perimeter player whether a point guard, shooting guard or small forward.
Senior Katie Ohm was honored with the Golden Gopher Award, an honor bestowed upon a player who displays what a Minnesota student-athlete is all about - the values, respect, loyalty and integrity of being a Golden Gopher athletically, academically and in the community – throughout a collegiate career. Ohm started 65 of her 125 career games and finished third in career three-point field goals with 199. Over the course of her career, she averaged 6.8 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. She was honored as Minnesota’s recipient of the 2010 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Ohm is also this year’s recipient of the team’s Most Outstanding Scholar Award. She is pursuing a master’s degree and will begin a prestigious program at the Mayo Clinic in physical therapy in the fall.
Junior Kristen Dockery was honored with 2010 Coaches Award, an award selected by the coaching staff in recognition of a player’s impact on her team, her leadership qualities and work ethic. Dockery has struggled with injury throughout her Gopher career but has emerged as a team leader. She is regarded a great and supportive teammate on the court and off.
Sophomore Kiara Buford was the recipient of the Gophers’ Most Improved Player award. Buford, a sophomore from St. Paul, was named to the Big Ten media’s All-Big Ten Honorable Mention team. The 5-11 guard led the Golden Gophers in scoring averaging 13.1 points per game. A Gopher starter in all 29 games, Buford also ranked third on the team in rebounding (4.3 rpg.), assists (1.9 apg.) and steals (1.3 spg.).
The Terry McFarland Sixth Player of the Year Award is given to a person who makes a special contribution to the Golden Gopher program, whether in time, effort, donation or spirit.
