Gophers Tripped By Badgers in Tight Match

In a match that came down to a third-set tiebreaker in the deciding match, Wisconsin prevailed over Minnesota 4-3 in a Big Ten contest on Friday in Madison, Wis.
The Badgers' Kathleen Saltarelli won two tiebreakers over Magdalena Wiecha at No. 6 singles after dropping the first set to win 2-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the final match. Saltarelli won both tiebreakers by 7-4 scores.
Minnesota dropped to 10-11 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin improved to 7-13 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
The Gophers swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead as Mariana Spilca and Wiecha opened with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Alexa Palen and Alessandra Ferrazzi followed with an 8-6 win at No. 1 and Tijana Koprivica and Jackie Sperling won by the same score at No. 2.
Wisconsin won the next two matches in singles play as Angela Chupa downed Doron Muravnik 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Katya Mirnova defeated Sperling 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3.
Minnesota responded with a pair of wins to regain a 3-2 lead. Palen beat Jessica Seyferth 7-6, 6-2 at No. 4 and Ferrazzi held off Hannah Berner 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2.
The Badgers tied the match when Alaina Trgovich rallied past Koprivica at No. 1 by a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 score before Saltarelli's clinching victory at No. 6.
The Gophers continue their road trip with a match at Northwestern on Sunday at 11 a.m.
