Minnesota Volleyball Announces 2010 Schedule

The Minnesota volleyball team will play 10 teams from last year's NCAA Tournament as part of its 2010 schedule according to an announcement by Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert.

Minnesota will start off with a pair of home tournaments when it hosts the Golden Gopher Invite on Aug. 27-28 and the Diet Coke Classic on Sept. 3-4. The Golden Gophers will host Denver, Marquette and Stony Brook as part of Golden Gopher Invite. Minnesota will then welcome 2009 NCAA Regional participant Baylor and a pair of 2009 NCAA Tournament participants in Dayton and Northern Iowa in the Diet Coke Classic.

The Golden Gophers will head on the road for their other two non-conference tournaments when they play in the Duke Tournament on Sept. 10-11 and the San Diego Tournament on Sept. 17-18. Minnesota will face 2009 NCAA participant Duke, North Carolina Central and Delaware in that tournament. The Golden Gophers will also face 2009 NCAA Tournament participant UC Santa Barbara, along with San Diego State and host San Diego in that tournament.

Minnesota opens the 2010 Big Ten season at 2009 NCAA participant Michigan State on Sept. 24 and will face 2009 NCAA Regional Finalist Michigan on the road on Sept. 25. The Golden Gophers first home conference weekend will feature matchups against Purdue on Oct. 1 and Indiana on Oct. 3.

On Oct. 15, Minnesota will have its first matchup against the three-time defending National Champion Penn State Nittany Lions at State College, Pa. The Golden Gophers will host 2009 NCAA Regional Semifinalist Illinois on Oct. 22 and then will host Wisconsin the Border Battle at Williams Arena on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.

Minnesota welcomes Michigan and Michigan State to Sports Pavilion on Nov. 12 and 13 respectively. The Golden Gophers will finish the Big Ten road schedule at Wisconsin (Nov. 19) and Illinois (Nov. 20). Minnesota will host 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Ohio State (Nov. 26) and Penn State (Nov. 27) as part of the final weekend of the regular season.

The Golden Gophers return nine letterwinners from last year's Final Four team, including First-Team All-American middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer, Final Four All-Tournament honoree Hailey Cowles and NCAA Regional Tournament MVP Tabitha Love. The Golden Gophers welcome in four freshmen, including two Top 15 seniors in Ashley Wittman and Tori Dixon. Minnesota also brings in Stephanie Nucci, a setter who is a junior transfer from UCLA.
