True freshman Oladipo Fagbemi won the triple jump on Saturday at the Drake Relays, sailing to a distance of 49 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Fagbemi captured Minnesota’s 49th Drake Relays crown, but the very first in the triple jump.
Fagbemi took the lead in the event on his second jump of prelims, bettering the 15-meter mark (15.09m) for the first time in his Gopher career with the leap measuring 49-6. The Gopher rookie improved his distance with his winning leap in his third attempt. The mark of 49-11 1/4 ranks as the eighth-best jump in Minnesota history and is currently the second-best leap in the Big Ten this season.
Drake Quotes
Oladipo Fagbemi, Minnesota, freshman, winner men’s university-college triple jump, 49-11¼ (15.22m)
On the day and his winning jump: “It was a little rainy, but I actually liked it. It was warm, but the rain cooled you off. So most people might say the weather’s not too good, but I couldn’t ask for better weather. I was so ready. The first couple of jumps weren’t as good as I wanted them to be, but that last one was almost perfect for me. “
On winning a Drake Relays championship as a freshman and his first Drake experience: “This is way bigger than our state meet, obviously. It’s nice to have such a large crowd. And it’s nice to see all the world class athletes. That [men’s special] 200, I stood up to watch that. I was excited and I can’t wait until next year. Hopefully I improve and hopefully the competition improves. It’s going to be an amazing experience to be here for the next three years.”
