Former University of Minnesota football players Garrett Brown, Nick Tow-Arnett and Traye Simmons have signed free agent contracts with National Football League squads. Brown signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Tow-Arnett is now under contract to the Dallas Cowboys and Simmons signed with the San Diego Chargers.
In addition to Brown and Tow-Arnett, former Gopher cornerback Marcus Sherels and defensive lineman Barrett Moen will work out with the Minnesota Vikings at their rookie minicamp on a tryout basis. Former center Jeff Tow-Arnett will get a tryout with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well.
Brown was very excited to be joining the Chiefs.
"It's a dream come true," Brown said. "I'm ready to start a new chapter in mycareer. They didn't draft any defensive tackles and they only have three on the team right now. That gives me a good chance. Hopefully, I can make the two-deep and the 53-man roster by the end ofAugust."
Simmons said he is looking forward to showing the Chargers what he can bring to their squad.
"It's a great feeling to sign an NFL contract," Simmons said. "I've been working hard all my life and this is my opportunity. I'm going to take full advantage of it. I want to help the San Diego Chargers win football games, win division titles, get back to the Super Bowl. It is a great organization and a winning team. I think I have a lot to offer them and I think my best football is ahead of me."
Sherels was looking forward to his opportunity as well.
"This is a great opportunity," Sherels told the Star-Tribune. "Any time you can try to play at the highest level of football, it doesn’t get any better than that."
