The University of Minnesota women’s hockey team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2010-11 season, announced today by head coach Brad Frost. The Golden Gophers will host 18 home games as well as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association tournament championship, March 4-5 at Ridder Arena. The Gophers will play Clarkson, Minnesota Duluth and Harvard this season, all of which were nationally-ranked teams in the final U.S. College Hockey Online poll last year.
After hosting an exhibition game on Sept. 26 against Manitoba, Minnesota is on the road for a two-game set against Clarkson, Oct. 1-2. The Gophers open the home season against Maine and Wayne State (Oct. 8-9) and follow with the WCHA opener against North Dakota (Oct. 15-16) at Ridder Arena. After the Gophers travel to St. Cloud State (10/22-23), Minnesota travels to Minnesota Duluth the last weekend in October. The Wisconsin Badgers come to town Nov. 5-6, while the Harvard Crimson will play at Ridder over Thanksgiving weekend (11/26 & 28). Minnesota then closes the first half with a road trip to Bemidji State (12/3-4) and a home series against Ohio State (12/10-11).
Minnesota will start the second half with two home series in Minnesota State (1/7-8) and UMD (1/14-15), while traveling to OSU and Wisconsin the following weeks on Jan. 21-22 and Jan. 28-29. The Gophers’ final two home series of the regular season are against St. Cloud State (2/4-5) and Bemidji State (2/11-12) before heading up to North Dakota (2/18-19) for the regular season finale. As in the years past, the Gophers will play in the first round of the WCHA playoffs before serving as the host of the WCHA FINAL FACEOFF, March 4-5. If the Gophers advance to the NCAA competition, the regional weekend falls on March 11-12, while the Frozen Four will be hosted by Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa., March 18 & 20.
Minnesota earned its second-straight WCHA regular season title in 2009-10, an honor it shared with UMD. With a 26-9-5 overall record and a 19-1-1 mark at home, the Gophers advanced to their second-straight NCAA Frozen Four last year. The Maroon and Gold return 15 letterwinners from last year’s team, including first-team All-Americans Noora Raty and Anne Schleper. Jen Schoullis, who red-shirted last season, also returns to the Gopher lineup, while coach Frost adds seven freshmen to the team.
