Three Gophers Named to Academic All-District Teams

Minnesota landed two student-athletes – Heather Dorniden and Megan Duwell - on the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 5 First Team for the sports of cross country and track & field by a vote of the nation sports information directors. Dorniden and Duwell advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America honors. Another senior, Alicia Rue, was named to the Academic All-District 5 Second Team.
Dorniden graduated in December of 2009 with a degree in kinesiology, but is eligible for the award since she competed in the cross country season last fall. The Inver Grove Height, Minn., native finished her Golden Gopher running career as a nine-time All-American and as the most highly decorated women’s track athlete in Minnesota history.
Duwell, a senior from West Bend, Wis., can make a little history over her own when she competes in the 10,000 meters at next week’s NCAA Championships. Duwell has already earned All-America honors in two sports this school year – cross country and indoor track (5,000 meters). An All-America honor in the NCAA outdoor meet would make Duwell the first Gopher to earn national acclaim in three individual events in an academic year. Duwell graduated in May with a degree in marketing and operations management.
Rue finished her Gopher career as a three-time All-American in the pole vault. Rue was a recipient of Minnesota’s 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award, an award presented to student-athletes who are accomplished in the four major areas emphasized by the NCAA Life Skills Program: Academics, Athletics, Leadership and Volunteerism. Rue, a native of Plymouth, Minn., graduated in May with a degree in math education.
