Junior Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) was drafted by the Houston Astros with the 33rd overall pick of the Major League Baseball Draft in the Compensatory Round on Monday, June 7.
Kvasnicka is the highest drafted Golden Gopher player since Glen Perkins was selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in 2004 in the first round. He is also the highest selected Minnesota position player since Brent Gates, who was drafted by the Oakland Athletics with 26th overall pick in the first round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft. Kvasnicka becomes the first Golden Gopher to be drafted by the Houston Astros.
He enters tonight's NCAA Regional Championship game against Cal State Fullerton batting .350 with eight home runs, 48 RBI, 50 runs, a .457 on-base percentage and 46 walks on the season. Kvasnicka has reached base in 39 straight contests, and in 60 of the 61 games played this year.
Kvasnicka, who was named a Second-Team All-Big Ten outfielder this year and in a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection in 2009, tied for second in walks (18) in conference play, tied for third in runs scored (26), tied for fifth in doubles (9) and was fifth in on-base percentage (.462). He batted .364 with 26 runs and 23 RBI in Big Ten play. He is also ranked 33rd in the nation in walks and 36th in doubles.
His dad, Jay Kvasnicka, was also drafted out of the University of Minnesota by the Minnesota Twins in the eighth round of the 1988 Major League Baseball Draft. Jay and Michael Kvasnicka, join Tom and Mike Mee and Frank and Rick Brosseau as the only father-son combos to play for the Golden Gophers and both get drafted.
