Seven University of Minnesota football student-athletes took time out of their day to meet and visit patients at the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital today.

Organized by Gopher quarterback Moses Alipate, the Gophers piled into the van at 10 a.m. and spent the next two hours visiting children in the hospital. Along with Alipate were Jon Hoese, Matt Garin, Gary Tinsley, Shady Salamon, Adam Weber and Ryan Wynn.

The Gophers were welcomed by members of the hospital staff, divided into three groups and branched off into different areas of the hospital. They followed administrators as they introduced the football players, took photos and met with the patients and their families. Some kids, although a little shy, were excited to talk with players and discussed topics as hometowns, books, movies and television. Along with the players asking questions, so were the patients. Some of the families asked what position they played, who they were all playing this year and when they started in the sport.

Under the Brewster regime, the Gopher football team has gone out to a children’s hospital every Friday morning prior to a home game. In talking with Gopher starting quarterback Adam Weber, it really puts things in perspective and helps them all realize that life is a lot bigger than football.

Located on the east and west banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis and affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School, University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital provides a broad spectrum of pediatric programs and services -- ranging from pediatric general surgery, imaging and neonatal and pediatric intensive care to cardiac and oncology services and blood and marrow and organ transplantation. The hospital also is home to Minnesota’s only children's behavioral inpatient unit and programming exclusively devoted to children ages 12 and younger. University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital features one of the three largest kidney transplant programs in the world specializing in infants and small children.
