Minnesota-Texas Football Series Canceled

University of Minnesota Athletics officials announced today that the Golden Gophers' two-game football series with Texas has been canceled due to a contract impasse concerning video rights.

The home-and-home series with Texas was scheduled to be played during the 2015 and 2016 seasons, with Minnesota hosting the opening game of the series at TCF Bank Stadium. It would have been the first meeting on the gridiron between the Gophers and Longhorns since 1936.

"We are extremely disappointed that the series with Texas will not take place," said Minnesota Director of Athletics Joel Maturi. "Our institution, student-athletes and fans were very excited about having a nationally respected program like Texas on our schedule. However there are complex rights issues in play that are beyond our control. It's unfortunate that a mutually acceptable resolution could not be found that would have allowed the games to be played."

"I'm extremely disappointed that Texas has chosen not to play us," Gopher head coach Tim Brewster said. "This was very unexpected, considering we had an agreement in principal. Our fans and our team were excited to play Texas. Obviously, they weren't as excited about playing us. We plan to fill that slot in our upcoming schedule with a quality BCS opponent."

With two future openings now on its schedule, Maturi said Minnesota will look to immediately fill those slots with another quality non-conference opponent, preferably from a BCS conference.
