Minnesota Ranked No. 6 in Preseason Poll

The Minnesota volleyball team shared the No. 6 ranking in the AVCA Top 25 Preseason poll, which was released on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
Minnesota matched its second-highest preseason ranking in school history. The Golden Gophers were ranked No. 5 in the 2004 preseason poll and No. 6 in the 2003 preseason poll. Minnesota tied Illinois for sixth in the preseason poll with 1,149 points.
The Golden Gophers have been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 33 straight weeks dating back to the final poll in 2007. Minnesota set the school-record with 40 straight weeks in the top 25 from Oct. 20, 2003 to Sept. 4, 2006. The Golden Gophers finished the 2009 season ranked No. 4 in the nation.
Minnesota is joined by three Big Ten teams in the top 12 in the preseason poll. Penn State is ranked No. 1, Illinois is tied for No. 6 and Michigan is No. 12. Ohio State (120), Michigan State (5) and Wisconsin (5) also received votes in the preseason poll.
Three teams on Minnesota's non-conference schedule were ranked in the preseason top 25. That list included No. 21 Dayton, No. 22 San Diego and No. 24 Northern Iowa. Baylor (122), Duke (63), UC Santa Barbara (51) and San Diego State (14) all received votes in the preseason top 25.
Minnesota will open up its 2010 schedule against Denver on Friday, Aug. 27 at 8 p.m. as part of the Golden Gopher Invite. The Golden Gophers will also host their Media Day on Tuesday, Aug. 24 at 2:45 p.m. Minnesota will have Volleyball 101 that night from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
