In today’s blog, Gophersports.com spotlights the incoming Gophers who are preparing for their first season with the Maroon and Gold.

On a team that has some of the most experienced college football players in the country, it’s easy to forget the importance that Minnesota’s freshman class could have on this year’s team. Primarily in the Gophers defensive secondary and offensive backfield, Minnesota newcomers have a significant chance of seeing playing time in their first year – normally a year spent developing physically and mentally.

However, for some new faces at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex, expectations are that they will step right onto the field and into a game-day role for the Gophers. After losing nine starters on defense to graduation in 2009, fans could potentially see one or more newcomers on the field in the defensive secondary this year. The same can be said for Minnesota’s running back corps, where three incoming players may compete for time in the backfield. The offensive line, meanwhile, should be able to rely on its experienced veterans barring any injuries – giving the new group of blockers a year to develop and form a bond as a unit.
