On the heels of learning that the University of Minnesota's two-game series with the University of Texas had been canceled, head coach Tim Brewster reiterated his commitment to the Gophers playing a quality schedule during his media session today at the 2010 Big Ten Kickoff.
According to Brewster, one of his immediate goals when taking the helm at Minnesota was to improve the Gophers' non-conference scheduling. And he has certainly done just that, signing to home-and-home series with Southern California, North Carolina and Navy.
"I want to try to bring the national spotlight to the University of Minnesota," said Brewster. "And that's something that through assistant athletic director Marc Ryan and director of athletics Joel Maturi we were able to accomplish with our scheduling. We're extremely proud that Southern Cal is going to be coming to the Twin Cities to play in TCF Bank Stadium this year. We play one of the top five toughest schedules in America (this fall). It's something we embrace, and are proud of."
With Texas dropping out of the picture, Brewster said that he is committed to making sure the Longhorns are replaced with a quality BCS opponent.
"We're going to take a very aggressive stance and approach to nonconference scheduling, because it only helps us," he said. "We want to be a championship caliber program at the University of Minnesota, and we think to do that we've got to bring the spotlight to us."
