Minnesota Defeats Stony Brook in Three Sets

The Minnesota volleyball team (2-0) put forth another dominating performance defeating Stony Brook (0-2) in three sets by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-15 in its second match of the Gopher Invite on Saturday, Aug. 28.
With Marquette's three-set victory over Denver earlier in the day, Minnesota and Marquette are each 2-0 in the Gopher Invite. The two teams will meet for the tournament championship tonight at 7 p.m. Denver and Stony Brook both dropped to 0-2, and will face each other at 3 p.m.
The Gophers were led by freshman Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) who hit .647 (13-2-17) with 13 kills and two blocks. Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) hit .474 (9-0-19) with nine kills, a career-best 10 digs and three blocks. Freshman Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) also had 12 kills, eight digs and a match-high five blocks.
Junior transfer Stephanie Nucci (Gilbert, Ariz.) played her first match at setter for the Gophers and had 36 assists and six digs. Senior Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit .778 (7-0-9) with seven kills and three blocks in two sets, while Jessica Granquist (Blaine, Minn.) had a match-high 13 digs.
Minnesota outhit Stony Brook .425 to .071, including a .500 hitting percentage in the first two sets. The Gophers also outblocked the Seawolves 9.0-to-0.0. Minnesota also outdug Stony Brook 46 to 33 for the match.
Stony Brook was led by Alicia Nelson who had eight kills and four digs, while Greta Strenger had six kills and seven digs. Jeanette Gibbs also had 10 digs.
