Love and Wittman Collect Weekly Honors

Sophomore Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) and freshman Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) collected weekly honors in the Big Ten according to an announcement on Monday, Aug. 30.

Love was named Big Ten Player of the Week, while Wittman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. It marked the second time in her career that Love claimed Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Wittman claimed the first conference freshman honors of the year, and joined Love, who claimed it twice and 2009, as Gophers who have been tabbed Big Ten Freshman of the Week.

For the week, Love averaged 4.56 kps, 2.22 dps, 1.11 blps and hit .407. She had a match-high 14 kills in a three-set victory over Denver, and collected a career-best 10 digs against Stony Brook. Love also had a match-high 18 kills against Marquette, and hit .438 in the championship match.

Wittman averaged 4.22 kps, 2.89 dps, 0.78 blps, hit .478 and received 66 of 67 serves perfectly in the first week of her Golden Gopher career. She hit .588 with 11 kills and 12 digs in her collegiate debut against Denver on Aug. 27. With that performance, Wittman became only the fourth Golden Gopher since 1981 to have a double-double in her freshman debut. She also had 12 kills, eight digs and five blocks in a three-set victory over Stony Brook. Wittman then hit .636 (15-1-22) with 15 kills and six digs in the championship match against Marquette on Aug. 28.

Minnesota will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 3 when it hosts Baylor at 8 p.m. in its first match of the Diet Coke Classic. The Golden Gophers will also face Northern Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. and Dayton at 8 p.m. All three matches can be seen live in the Gold Zone.
