Gopher Men Ranked 26th in Preseason Poll

The Minnesota men’s cross country team was ranked 26th in the preseason U.S. Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll release today. The Golden Gophers, who have advanced to the NCAA Championships in 12 of the last 13 seasons, are listed fourth in the Midwest Region behind Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Iowa State.

The Gophers kick off the 2010 season on Saturday, Sept. 4, at the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah. The Minnesota roster includes eight returning letterwinners led by All-American and two-time defending Big Ten champion Hassan Mead. Three other runners have earned All-NCAA Midwest Region honors during their Gopher career - Ben Blankenship, Mike McFarland and Mike Torchia. Head coach Steve Plasencia enters his 15th season with the Gophers.

Stanford was tabbed with the number-one preseason USTFCCCA ranking, followed by Oklahoma State, Northern Arizona, Oregon and Alabama.
