Minnesota Ranked No. 8 in AVCA Poll

The Minnesota volleyball team was ranked No. 8 in the AVCA Top 25 poll on Monday, Aug. 30. The Golden Gophers received 1,123 points in the poll.

This past week, Minnesota defeated Denver, Marquette and Stony Brook in three sets each to win the Gopher Invite. The Golden Gophers will host Baylor, No. 20 Dayton and No. 22 Northern Iowa in the Diet Coke Classic this week.

Minnesota has now been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 34 straight weeks dating back to the final poll in 2007. The Golden Gophers set the school-record with 40 straight weeks in the top 25 from Oct. 20, 2003 to Sept. 4, 2006. Minnesota finished the 2009 season ranked No. 4 in the nation, and has now been ranked in the top 10 the last three weeks.

The Golden Gophers are joined by three Big Ten teams in the poll. Penn State is ranked No. 1, Illinois is No. 5 and Michigan is No. 19. Ohio State (90), Michigan State (29) and Wisconsin (10) also received votes in the preseason poll.
