Camp Blog: Off and Running
Friday morning got the Golden Gopher football season off and running - literally. The entire squad was up before dawn and ready for their annual conditioning test, which was held at 6 a.m. at the Gibson-Nagurski Complex.
Head strength and conditioning coach Mark Hill took the team through a warm-up period before putting the Gophers through the conditioning test, which consisted of 16 110-meter sprints. The team was broken up into three groups, by position. Each group was given an allotted amount of time to complete its sprints.
Coach Brewster was pleased with the conditioning test. He was especially complimentary of the offensive and defensive lines when addressing the team afterward.
"I thought our guys did a nice job," Brewster said. "They showed that they got in great condition for this fall. Overall, I thought it was an excellent first test."
Senior defensive back Ryan Collado has been through a conditioning test at the beginning of each of Coach Brewster's four preseason training camps. He also thought it went well.
"It was a good run test," Collado said. "It was nice to come out here and show the coaches what we've been working on all summer. We're in great shape and ready to start camp."
The rest of the day shapes up like this: Newcomers will be in meetings and then practice this morning, while the returning players are in the weight room. The afternoon will see a number of meetings, followed by a practice session for the returning players, while the newcomers hit the weights. The evening will conclude with a couple more meetings, before the Gophers get some rest to prepare for Day 2.
We'll log a report from Friday's afternoon practice later this evening here on the camp blog.
