Freshman Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week according to an announcement by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 13.

Wittman becomes the second Gopher to receive Big Ten Player of the Week honors, joining Tabi Love who claimed them on Aug. 30. Wittman also claimed Freshman of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks. Minnesota has had three different players claim weekly honors in the first three weeks as Love (Player of the Week on Aug. 30), Jessica Granquist (Def. Player of the Week on Sept. 6) and Wittman have each collected the honors.

On the week, Wittman averaged 4.10 kps, 4.00 dps and 0.90 blps in three matches as the Golden Gophers went 3-0 and won the Duke Invitational. She was named to the All-Tournament team for her performance on the week. On Saturday, morning Wittman tallied a career-high 20 kills, had 18 digs and collected four blocks. She also had 12 kills, 11 digs and two blocks in the championship match against Duke.

Wittman enters the week seventh in the Big Ten in kills (3.81 kps), ninth in digs (3.68 dps) and seventh in points (4.35 pps).

The Golden Gophers will finish up non-conference play at the San Diego State/USD Tournament on Sept. 17-18. Minnesota will face UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. (CT). The Golden Gophers will also play at San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. (CT) and at No. 25 San Diego at 9 p.m. (CT).
