Minnesota Men Open at BYU
The Minnesota men’s cross country team travels to Provo, Utah, to open the 2010 season at the BYU Autumn Classic. The 4-mile event begins at 12:30 p.m. CT.
An Early Season Test
The Golden Gophers enter the season ranked 26th in the preseason USTFCCCA National Poll. Minnesota will face an early season test at the Autumn Classic running against No. 17 BYU. The two teams will also see each other later this month at the Roy Griak Invitational.
The Gopher Lineup
Golden Gopher senior Hassan Mead is not scheduled to compete this week. Two all-region honorees, Mike McFarland and Mike Torchia, will lead the charge for the Gophers. Torchia returns to the lineup after missing the 2009 season with an injury. Three redshirt freshmen are set to see their first collegiate action: Andrew Larsen, Steve Sulkin and Eric Truedson.
Minnesota Coaching Staff
Golden Gopher head coach Steve Plasencia is in his 15th season leading the Minnesota program. Plasencia has guided the Gophers to NCAA Championships berths in 12 of his 14 years with his alma mater with the 2007 eighth-place NCAA finish the Gophers’ best since 1969. Volunteer assistant coach Chris Rombough is in his first year on the Gopher coaching staff after collecting three All-America honors in his Minnesota cross country career.
