Minnesota Hosts Diet Coke Classic

The Minnesota volleyball team (3-0) will host the Diet Coke Classic when it welcomes No. 20 Dayton, No. 22 Northern Iowa and Baylor to the Sports Pavilion on Sept. 3-4.

In the first match of the tournament, Dayton will face Northern Iowa on Friday, Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m. The Golden Gophers will then host Baylor at 8 p.m. Minnesota will face the Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m. Baylor will take on Dayton in the second match of the day at 1:30 p.m. Northern Iowa and Baylor will face each other at 5:30 p.m., and Minnesota will wrap up the second day against Dayton.

The Golden Gophers went 3-0 in their first weekend with three-set victories over Denver, Marquette and Stony Brook. Tabi Love was named Big Ten Player of the Week, while freshman Ashley Wittman was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Freshman Tori Dixon was named to the All-Tournament team, as she averaged 3.22 kps, hit .522 (29-5-46) and 0.89 blps, while senior Lauren Gibbemeyer hit .462 (22-4-39) with 2.75 kps and 2.12 blps. Jessica Granquist, who was named the Gopher Invite MVP last week, is averaging 2.78 dps, while setter Stephanie Nucci has 14.33 aps and 2.17 dps.

Baylor enters the week with a 2-1 overall record and is receiving 24 votes in the AVCA Top 25. The Bears defeated Butler (3-0), Stephen F. Austin (3-1) and lost to SMU in five sets last week in a home tournament. Baylor is led by Ashlie Christenson who is averaging 3.08 kps and 2.83 dps. Elizabeth Graham is leading the team in blocks at 2.08 blps and has 2.50 kps. Allison King also leads the team with 4.75 dps.

Dayton brings a 3-0 record into the week and is ranked No. 20 in the AVCA Top 25. The Flyers defeated Pittsburgh (3-0), Arizona State (3-1) and VCU (3-0) in a home tournament last week. Amanda Cowdrey leads the team with 2.80 kps and 2.90 dps, while Rachel Krabacher has 2.40 kps and 2.70 dps. Lindsey Fletmeier leads the team with 1.80 blps and 2.00 kps. Setter Jessica Yanz leads the team with 9.60 aps and 2.60 dps, while Paige Vargas has 3.80 dps.

Northern Iowa has a 3-0 record entering the Diet Coke Classic, and is ranked No. 22 in the AVCA Top 25. Last week, the Panthers defeated Central Michigan (3-0), Western Kentucky (3-0) and Purdue (3-2) in West Lafayette, Ind. Northern Iowa is led by Krista DeGeest who is averaging 2.73 kps and 1.27 blps. Amy Braun also has 2.36 kps and 2.45 dps. Bre Payton has 2.73 kps, 8.91 aps and 2.73 dps, while Ellen Blankenship leads the team with 3.45 dps.
