The University of Minnesota was informed late Friday afternoon that defensive back Kim Royston has been granted a sixth year of eligibility.

Royston played his first two seasons at Wisconsin, before transferring to Minnesota in 2008. He sat out the 2008 season due to transfer regulations, before playing his junior season in 2009. Royston broke his leg in spring practice leading up to the 2010 season and was unable to compete last season.

Royston was the Gophers' third-leading tackler in 2009, with 86 total stops. He started all 13 games, recording one interception, six pass breakups, one forced fumble, 1.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack. Royston was voted a captain by his teammates prior to the 2010 season.
