Gophers Lead Rutgers Invitational After Day One

Minnesota won five events and tallied 136 team points to lead the Rutgers Invitational after the first day of competition in Piscataway, N.J. The Golden Gophers are the defending team champion in the event.
Topping the list of performances are a pair of pool records set by junior Ashley Steenvoorden in the 500-yard freestyle and sophomore Haley Spencer in the 200 breaststroke. Steenvoorden captured the title in the 500 free in a time of 4 minutes, 46.04 seconds, with her twin sister coming in second in 4:53.07.
Spencer clocked a winning time of 2:14.01 in the 200 breast. She was also swam the breaststroke leg of the Gophers’ winning 400 medley relay. The relay of Hannah Whitehead, Spencer, Kaylee Jamison and Meagan Radecke posted a time of 3:45.15, winning the event by over six seconds.
Whitehead added an individual title of her own taking first place in the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:59.51.
Freshman Maggie Keefer collected the Gophers’ fifth title of the evening, winning the 1-meter diving with a score of 303.10.
The Invitational continues on Saturday.
