Minnesota Joins Girls and Women in Sport Celebration

The University of Minnesota Athletics Department will be taking part in several events in conjunction with the celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The national theme for this year's celebrations is, "Play, Believe, Achieve." The national observance is Wednesday, Feb.2, however, the Golden Gophers will start their activities on Sunday, Jan. 30.
Sunday's events are centered around the Gopher women's basketball game versus Michigan that tips off at 2 p.m. Prior to the game, groups of girls from area organizations and scout troops will participate in a Youth Sports Clinic at the University Recreation Center. The girls will have the chance to interact with Gopher women student-athletes as well as have a photo taken with national champion mascot Goldy Gopher. The girls will then take some exciting Big Ten basketball in Williams Arena to compete the day.
During the Youth Clinic, parents will take part in a Parent's Clinic, hosted by staff members of the nationally acclaimed Tucker Center for Research on Girls and Women in Sport.
The winners of an essay contest celebrating Minnesota Girls and Women in Sports Day will be announced during hafltime of the Gopher women's basketball game. Aspiring writers were encouraged to submit an essay on, "How participating in sports impacts your life?"
On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Minnesota Athletics Department will host its annual Jean Freeman Girls and Women in Sports Breakfast at the U of M Boathouse. This year's featured speaker is Peg Brendon, a State of Minneosta Justice and a pioneer in Title IX advocacy.
The U of M, the Tucker Center and the Minnesota Lynx will compete the Girls and Women in Sports celebration by presenting a sneak preview of Sony's film, The Might Mac, on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in the DQ Club Room of TCF Bank Stadium. The film is an inspiring true soty of the first national championships college women's basketball team.
