The University of Minnesota welcomes Indiana to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium Friday night at 7 p.m. for a match that has great significance towards which eight teams will qualify for the 2011 Big Ten Tournament.
Last Time Out
The Golden Gophers (6-8-2, 3-3-2 Big Ten) are coming off a weekend split with Illinois and Northwestern, where they battle through two one-goal matches. Last Friday, the Illini snuck in a first half goal to take the early 1-0 lead, and the Maroon and Gold were unable to answer as they fell 1-0. Minnesota rebounded on Sunday as junior Allie Phillips notched the lone goal of the match in the 60th minute to give the Gophers a 1-0 road victory over the Wildcats.
Sunday's triumph also gave junior goalkeeper Cat Parkhill her 32nd career win, which hoisted her to third all-time in Minnesota history. The Apple Valley, Minn. native surpassed her predecessor Lindsey Dare who garnered 31 saves from 2005-08.
Scouting Indiana
This Friday night at 7 p.m., Minnesota takes on a struggling Indiana club that enters ELR Stadium on a three-match losing streak. The Hoosiers (6-9-1, 2-6-0 Big Ten) are led offensively by Orianica Velsquez, Lisa Nouanesengsy and Carly Samp, who combine for 40 of the team's 63 points (17 goals, six assists). Lindsay Campbell will start in goal for IU, and she has 74 saves on the season, which ranks her third in the Big Ten. As a team, Indiana has allowed the most goals in the Big Ten this season (32).
Looking Back at 2010
Last season, head coach Mikki Denney Wright and company escaped Bloomington, Ind. with a 3-0 victory over Indiana to push their winning streak over the Hoosiers to three. The Gophers' trio of goals were scored by Steph Brandt, Angie Olson and Shari Eckstrom.
The Series
Minnesota holds the all-time series advantage at 12-7-2 with a three-match winning streak over the Hoosiers heading into Friday's match. The Gophers are 8-1-1 all-time at home versus Indiana with the lone loss being a 3-1 defeat in 2001.
Freshman Phenom
Freshman Taylor Uhl leads the Gophers offensively with 19 points (nine goals, one assist), and the forward has marched her way up Minnesota's all-time freshman record boards. Her 19 points places her in a tie for eighth all-time (Haley Lentsch, 2003) while her nine goals put her in a three-way tie for fourth (Alison Rackley, 1998; Laurie Seidl, 1997).
Road Warriors
The Golden Gophers have played 11-of-16 games on the road this season. The squad now closes out the 2011 regular season schedule with a three-match homestand.
Next Time Out
The Golden Gophers host Purdue on Sunday at 1 p.m. for its final Sunday match of the season.
