Gophers Ink Hauer and Lawmaster to National Letters of Intent

University of Minnesota volleyball coach head coach Laura Bush has announced that Karlie Hauer (Andover, Minn.) and Lindsey Lawmaster (Los Alamitos, Calif.) have both signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Golden Gopher team in 2012.
A 5-foot, 11-inch outside hitter, Hauer is coming off the state tournament where she and Andover High School finished third. Having a stand-out year, Hauer capped off her senior season with all-state honors. She was named to the Star Tribune All-Metro Team as well as to the Prep Volleyball Senior Aces. Helping Andover to the state tournament appearance, Hauer was named to the all-tournament team in her junior and senior seasons. A two-time all-conference selection and an honorable mention, Hauer was also a two-time AVCA Player of the Week as well as the KARE 11 Athlete of the Week this season. She finished her Huskies career with 1445 kills, including 431 her senior year and hit .333. Along with her 224 career blocks, Hauer also had 637 digs and 125 career aces. A multiple-sport athlete, she also lettered in gymnastics, track and volleyball. Hauer has also played club volleyball with the Minnesota Select for the past three seasons and played within the USA Volleyball circuit this past summer. A standout in the classroom, Hauer earned academic all-state honors this year and academic gold in 2010 and 2011. The daughter of Debbie and Pete Hauer, she is coached by Constance Huberty and Lisa Kelly.
"Karlie is a phenomenal athlete with a great work ethic," Bush said. "We're excited to add another student-athlete to Gopher volleyball that's one of the best in the state of Minnesota."
"I chose the University of Minnesota for multiple reasons," Hauer said. "I wanted to go to a large campus that had great academic opportunities and still be able to play volleyball at a high level of competition. Along with great tradition, the coaching I will receive and the current members of the team, I felt Minnesota was the place to be."
Lawmaster is a 5-5 libero and played for Los Alamitos High School and the TCA Volleyball Club. Lawmaster has also played through USA Volleyball, both indoor and beach, as well as California Beach Volleyball Association volleyball. With Los Alamitos High School, Lawmaster had a 94 percent passing for 220 passes, 13 errors in 233 attempts. She had 177 digs in 204 attempts for 71 percent. With TCA Club, Lawmaster was the starting libero for the travel team that competed against international junior national teams in April of 2010. She was the co-captain in 2009-10 where she earned a Junior Nationals bronze medal in 2008-09. Within USA Volleyball indoor competition, Lawmaster was a gold medalist in back-to-back years (2008 and 2009) with the High Performance Championships with the Southern California Red Team. In beach volleyball, Lawmaster competed in August 2010 with the High Performance Presidential Exchange Team in Russia and at the High Performance Holiday Training Camp in Chula Vista. Lawmaster has also received honors such as the Congressional Leadership Award, the Best Defense Award and the Sunset All-League honorable mention. The daughter of Chris Lawmaster and Leslie Lawmaster and Mike Vitiello, she is also a four-year honor roll student.
"Lindsey has played at a very high level internationally as well as nationally," Bush said. "She's a spunky defensive specialist/libero and we expect her to continue the strong defensive tradition that Minnesota volleyball has built."
"I'm always open to change, and the fact that Minnesota is the polar opposite of Southern California really attracted me to the school," Lawmaster said. "I also felt that the coaching staff is one of the best in the nation especially with the addition of Hugh McCutcheon starting my freshman year. The girls are great, the campus is beautiful, the science department is top notch, but most of all I want to help the U win a national championship!"
