Gophers Sweep Hoosiers on Senior Night

The No. 19 Minnesota volleyball team swept Indiana in three sets, Friday night at the Sports Pavilion (25-13, 25-13, 25-18). It was the last game at home of the 2011 regular season as they honored their seniors, Hailey Cowles, Ariana Filho and Jessica Granquist. The victory increases the Gopher overall record to 18-11 and finished 11-9 in the Big Ten Conference.
The Gophers were lead by their outside hitters, Cowles and Ashley Wittman. Cowles finished the night with a double double recording 11 kills and 11 digs. Cowles also had five block assists and two service aces. Wittman also had 11 kills as well as five digs, two block assists and a service ace. Mia Tabberson had 35 assists, while Cowles, Tori Dixon and Filho each had five block assists. Minnesota outblocked the Hoosiers, 10-6.
Minnesota would go on a 5-1 and later an 11-3 run to win the first set, 25-13. The Gophers had 12 kills in 34 attempts and just one error to hit .423, while Indiana had nine attack errors and hit -.029 as they went up, 1-0. Wittman had five kills in the first set, which established her 500th of the season and hit .455 in the first set. Harms also had three in the set.
Minnesota added another 25-13 set win in the second as both Wittman and Cowles added five kills. Minnesota went up 7-1 early in the set when Wittman added a kill. After back-to-back attack errors by Indiana, the Hoosiers called a timeout at 18-9. Minnesota continued to roll after that, including three kills from Cowles for the set win. Minnesota held a side out of 85 percent (12-14) in the second set.
The Gophers closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the third. Indiana held only its second lead of the match at 1-0, but Minnesota rolled from that point. Minnesota would go on a four-point run with two kills from Dixon, another from Tabberson and an attack error by Indiana to force the Hoosiers to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Cowles served up an ace to go up, 13-8. Minnesota then continued to dominate as it closed out the match with kill and ace by Cowles, a kill by Dixon an attack error by Indiana and a kill by Cowles to end the match.
Minnesota will await to hear about the second season as the NCAA will host its selection show at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The show will be televised live on ESPNU.
