Florida State became the first ever ACC team to advance to the National Semifinals as it defeated Iowa State in five sets by scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 in the regional finals on Saturday, Dec. 10.
The Seminoles were led by Regional Most Outstanding Player Jekaterin Stepanova who had 20 kills, hit .378 and had nine digs. Visnja Djurdjevic, who was named to the regional All-Tournament team, had 14 kills and 19 digs on the match.
Sareea Freeman was also named to the All-Tournament team, as she had 12 kills, hit .500 and had 10 blocks in the match. She had 19 blocks for the tournament. Florida State libero had Katie Mosher had 24 digs in the match, and 52 in the two regional contests.
Florida State outhit Iowa State .245 to .204, despite the fact that the Cyclones had 75 kills to 65 for the Seminoles. Iowa State had 100 digs to 88 for the Florida State. The Seminoles outblocked the Cyclones 16.0-to-8.0 on the night.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match, as the Florida State hit a scalding .457 in the set. Iowa State narrowly pulled out the second set 25-23. The Seminoles heated back up hitting .310 on the way to claiming the third set 25-20. Iowa State limited Florida State to a .086 hitting percentage in the fourth set to win 25-19 to send the match to the fifth set.
Iowa State jumped out to an 8-6 lead in the fifth set after a service ace by Kristen Hahn. Florida State answered with a 4-0 run after the changeover and took a 10-8 lead when Freeman and Elise Walch combined on a block.
The Cyclones cut the lead to 11-10 after a kill by Carly Jenson. Florida State responded with three of the next four points and made it match point when Ashley Neff and Rachael Morgan combined on a block. Djurdjevic delivered a service ace to send the Seminoles to the National Semifinals.
Iowa State was led by Victoria Hurtt, who was named All-Tournament, who had a career-high 24 kills. Jenson was named All-Tournament, as she collected a career-high 28 digs and 14 kills. Hahn also had a match-high 25 digs, and was named All-Tournament. Tenisha Matlock also hit .414 with 15 kills.
