Postgame Quotes
Purdue (18-9, 8-6) 60, Minnesota (11-15, 3-10) 50
February 17, 2011
Minneapolis, Minn.
Minnesota Head Coach Pam Borton
Opening statement:
“The game tonight was obviously very disappointing for everything that we had going for us and the way that we’ve been playing, and losing the last couple games the last few possessions was very disappointing. We didn’t play well. I thought Bri (Mastey) was the only one that played real well. Obviously, Jackie (Voigt) had 11 rebounds. But it’s going to be tough to win basketball games when your starting three guards go 2-for-25. It’s going to be difficult. They’re playing a lot of minutes. They’re playing extremely hard, but we need more production from our starting backcourt.”
On Minnesota’s field goal drought in the last 8:35 of the game:
“I think we missed a wide open lay-up at one point. I thought we got the ball inside and I thought we missed some shots inside. You’ve got to credit Purdue’s defense as well. I thought they were very physical inside.”
On the importance of Brianna Mastey’s 17-point performance:
“Bri was keeping us in the game the entire time. She kept us in the game in the first half. We got ourselves down by eight or nine points, and Bri came off the bench and gave us a lot of production…made some big plays in the second half, and she kept us in the game there. This is a team where everybody has to step up. …We’re not going to win any basketball games with only player in double figures, and their best player with 27.”
On Brittany Rayburn:
“She got herself to the line. We left her open for a three. I think we had a breakdown in our 2-3 zone and left her open for a three. But she drove into the lane and we fouled her every single time.”
Minnesota Player Quotes
Brianna Mastey (Jr.)
On whether she felt extra pressure to step up tonight:
I really didn’t feel any pressure. I just kind of went out there tonight and played. I didn’t really worry about it too much. I just kept attacking, and once I hit a few shots I just kind of kept feeling it throughout the whole game. I just built that confidence in the first half and that’s just kind of how I went throughout the whole game.
On how she will carry over this success:
“I think I’ve just got to keep being aggressive and looking for my shot and being confident throughout the rest of the season.”
Jackie Voigt (Jr.)
On Purdue’s inside play:
“They’re definitely a very physical team, and we knew that coming in. We practiced against physical contact. I think it mainly hurt us in the second half trying to get rebounds. They just got a lot of second opportunites at a lot of crucial times.
On Purdue’s guards getting rebounds:
“It felt like they were crashing five in at a time, just trying to get the rebound. We missed one rebound and then it was kind of a scramble.”
Purdue Head Coach Sharon Versyp
Opening statement:
"We knew this was going to be a very tough battle. Minnesota has been in every single game this year, whether it's been at home or on the road. They are very balanced and a very difficult team to battle."
On focusing on turnovers after averaging 20 turnovers the last four road games:
"Thats been the focus, when we look at our stats on the road games. Shots, free throw attemps, offensive rebounds--everything has been down and that's because of all the turnovers on offense."
On Brittany Rayburn scoring her Big Ten season high of 27 points:
"She's finally getting healthy. She hasn't been healthy all Big Ten season, and once she gets her first shot going, she can really step up for us."
