Matyas Named to Senior CLASS Award List

Senior reliever Scott Matyas was one 30 players to be nominated for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for the sport of baseball.
Matyas was chosen along with 29 other NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The list of candidates follows this release.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 2011 candidate class includes 15 student-athletes with cumulative grade point averages of better than a 3.5, including three with perfect 4.0 GPAs. Seven are from teams ranked in the Collegiate Baseball preseason top 35 poll.
Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the winner June 24 at the NCAA College World Series® in Omaha. The list will also be trimmed down to a selected group of finalists at a later dateMatyas joins Michigan State's Brandon Eckerle as one of only two Big Ten players to be nominated for the award. Matyas and Eckerle were nominated along with San Francisco outfielder Connor Bernatz, Columbia pitcher Dan Bracey, Illinois State third baseman Ryan Court, Southeastern Louisiana catcher Josh Cryer, Portland pitcher Chris Dennis, Louisiana Tech catcher Clint Ewing, Davidson pitcher Mike Frongello, Texas pitcher Cole Green, Southern first baseman Frazier Hall, UC Irvine infielder/pitcher Brian Hernandez, East Tennessee State first baseman Paul Hoilman, Notre Dame pitcher Cole Johnson, Wichita State pitcher Tim Kelley, Army outfielder/pitcher Ben Koenigsfeld, Pittsburgh infielder Phil Konieczy, Fordham pitcher Max Krakowiak, East Carolina pitcher Seth Maness, Tennessee Tech outfielder Chad Oberacker, Auburn outfielder/first baseman Kevin Patterson, Fresno State first baseman Jordan Ribera, Western Kentucky catcher Matt Rice, Mashall pitcher Arik Sikula, Baylor outfielder Chris Slater, Tennessee-Martin shortstop/third baseman Cody Terry, Charlotte outfielder Cory Tilton, Kansas pitcher T.J.
